Fireflies and Harley Potter

Midsummer is indeed here.I saw my first poster for football sign ups....even though it is blasted hot outside, somewhere in between the atmosphere and the psyche, there is a hint of fall in the air...is it because the poster suggested fall?Maybe...but this I do know.I am anticipating a continual change in the season as we start bearing down on my favorite time of year.

I read a disturbing article in the newspaper the other day.Fireflies are becoming scarce due to development and pesticides being used.According to James Lloyd who is a firefly researcher(imagine that!)He has not seen some species in 15 years.I never thought of there being more than one species of firefly..there is actually over 2000.
Most of them are not urbanites but prefer wetlands and streams, meadows and lakes.Light from fireflies is nearly 100% efficient-it's a chemical process that produces no heat.Fireflies have been a staple to summer life in the south.According to this article, the Charlotte Jr.League published a cookbook called,"Dining by Fireflies".I loved catching fireflies when I was young..if I had known they were going to be so scarce as an adult, maybe I would not have taken them as a kid and squished them on my ring finger so I would have a glowing ring.

On another note,I have gotten into the habit of walking Harley my Jack Russel Rat Terrier mix, every morning and every evening. I noticed a scar on his nose.I guess he got it when he was trying to dig out from underneath the fence. The scar looks just like the scar Harry Potter has on his forehead which is like a lightning bolt.So in celebration of the new Harry Potter book coming out,I will from now on call my dog,Harley Potter!
