Harry Potter and Doug Marlette

Kids are great to hang out with. They are so full of this wonderful awe of a world I forgot a long time ago.

I went to go see Harry Potter with my 11 year old god child. We went to the 9:40 show.It was by far my favorite "Potter picture"...we got out at 12:00 midnight and Jade was so excited to be at the theatre at 12:00.It was the latest she had been at the movies. On the way home she noticed a world that was sleeping and how different it was...lights turned off in homes,no cars on the street,a mcDonalds that was open all night, how fast it was to get home with no other cars on the street.I forgot how cool that must be to a kid.It indeed made me stop and reconsider the things I so very easily take for granted...well except for the McDonalds open all night.

On a more somber note,my favorite political cartoonist was killed in an automobile wreck last week.Doug Marlette spent some time at the Charlotte Observer while I was in college. My mother made a practice of sending some of his cartoons in care packages while I was away from home.He was a native of NC and had written some great fiction .Even though I did not know him,he made me feel like I did;a true Everyman who had much to say about taking care of the poor and the disinfranchised.
His work will be missed.Check out www.dougmarlette.com
