Farmer's Markets and Turkeys

Went to this great little farmers market just a mile or so from my house.Actually I sold some herbs and bedding plants as well.It is a neat event twice a week. The hope is that it would grow since we do need a market in this area and hope to promote the idea of eating food locally. There is even a guy who comes out to play fiddle.Check it out at www.charlottetailgatemarket.com...it takes place beside a funky little neighborhood grocery called the Common market.Where else can I buy coffee, wine and a gift for my nephew in one stop.Last thing I got for my nephew there was a type of paperclip with a set of teeth on it.....oops... I just realized if my nephew is reading this, you just found out what one of your silly birthday gifts are from your wierd "Aunt Gaye "...sorry!

We have been enjoying walks around the block at dusk(thanks to the Summer Solstice this happens later and later) One of my neighbors has about 4 turkeys,at least one being female. When we pass his house,we see all 4 roosting on top of his house.Kind of look like vultures. It is quite a sight!Last week we saw mom turkey teaching chick turkeys how to fly. It is not uncommon to hear a turkey gobble when I go get the newspaper in the morning hours and every now and then the turkeys decide to take their own walk around the block...sometimes in full feather display. It makes my day to see this!

So here I live 10 minutes or less from downtown in a surburban neighborhood, and I write about farmers markets and turkeys close to the heart of the city.Just gotta love the community I live in.

I love farmer's markets. We've got one here in Decatur. When Jami and I were starting out, she asked me to go there and bring her a surprise vegetable - so I brought back cactus leaves and jicama. Now we have to find a new one when we move.
